Debian no Notebook Mirax mm6610

Já faz algum tempo em que não escrevo nada relacionado diretamente a Linux e ao Debian. Isso porque de certa forma fiquei sem nada interessante para escrever.
Porém, recentemente precisei adquirir um segundo computador para a casa. Como trabalho muito e ocasionalmente viajo, achei que um Notebook poderia ser uma boa idéia. No caso, adquiri no Extra um Notebook marca Mirax modelo MM6610. A configuração dessa máquina é a seguinte:

Claro que, apesar de ter vindo a licença, eu é que não fui infeliz de usar o Windows Vista. No caso, optei por equipar meu laptop com um Debian Etch 4.0 estável. A parte boa é que quase todo o hardware foi detectado de primeira, incluindo aí também questões como rede (roteada por um Roteador Bright Wireless, pegando tanto a interface Ethernet quanto a rede Wireless). A ruim é que houve algumas coisas que não funcionaram.
Vamos fazer então uma lista do que funcionou ou não e o que demandou algum “extra”:

  • CPU: Funcionou de primeira;
  • Vídeo: Pegou de primeira, com o driver i810, mas não consegui ativar Beryl, Compiz ou afins, apesar de todos os resultados dos glxgears ou glxinfo. Qualquer tentativa de rodar games 3D, como Penguin Racer, OpenArena ou TORCS provocam o travamento do hardware após um período de tempo aleatório;
  • Gravador de DVDs: Funcionou tranquilamente, embora o gravador OptiArc tenha alguns problemas para gravar DVDs, mas creio que isso é habitual em Laptops. Não testei a gravação de DVDs Dual Layer por falta de mídia;
  • Acesso a Hardware Externo USB:  Possuo uma combinação bastante sortida de pendrives e MP3 players e também uma câmera digital Sony DSC-W30 6 Megapixel e todos foram devidamente detectados pelo Laptop. Não fiz testes com a câmera digital usando o recurso PhotoBrigde pelo digikam;
  • Rede: ambas as interfaces levantaram normalmente. Fiz um teste durante uma viagem para interceptar hotspots em aeroportos e afins e foi tudo ok. Existem alguns detalhes dos quais falarei mais adiante;
  • Som: O grande drama, falarei sobre ele mais adiante;
  • Leitor de Cartões: Não funcionou;
  • Webcam: Não funcionou;
  • Firewire: Não testado;
  • Bluetooth: Não testado;

As características mais interessantes do hardware específicamente são o bom LCD 14,1″, bem claro e suficientemente luminoso, o leitor e gravador de DVDs bastante eficiente (apesar de um certo problema com gravação de mídias, que creio ser algo padrão no Linux) e as caixas de som internas que são bastante boas, apesar de caixas de som externas serem recomendáveis.
Agora, vamos aos comentários sobre a instalação.

  • Som

O Som foi a primeira coisa a “dar pau”. Na verdade não que tenha “dado pau”, mas sim que houve um problema por causa do driver Intel HDA vindo no ALSA que consta do Debian Etch, que impedia o correto jack detection (detecção da conexão do fone de ouvido na saída dele no laptop) e o desativamento do mesmo após a conexão. Recentemente o Debian atualizou o ALSA padrão, mas precisei de qualquer modo compilar o ALSA, o que acabou a me levar a compilar o Kernel, o que fiz seguindo as sugestões do site HowToForge. Algumas sugestões pessoais ao fazer isso são:

  • Compile o Kernel tendo embutido o seu filesystem root (/) e drivers para seu disco rígido (sugestão para usuários de disco Serial ATA: ativem o Generic SATA Driver como builtin). Sem isso, não adianta nem tentar bootar que você vai sofrer um kernel panic;
  • Use a versão baixada do kernel.org. Embora alguns puristas possam achar ruim isso, sempre aconselhando o uso do pacote kernel-sources, eu não percebi diferença nenhuma.
  • Não remova o kernel padrão do sistema. Por incrível que possa parecer, esse é um erro comum, que é sobrepor o kernel padrão do Debian pelo kernel customizado. A chance de você precisar reinstalar tudo é bem grande;
  • Instale os utilitários para compilação de kernel do Debian, principalmente o make-kpkg. Isso ajuda bastante no caso da instalação dos kernels no Debian;
  • Os kernels padrões na maioria das distros e do Debian em especial, ao serem instalados, gravam dentro de /boot, um arquivo chamado config-. Esse arquivo mantêm as configurações de compilação daquele kernel. Utilize essas configurações padrão como ponto de partida;
  • Usando o make-kpkg você fica com maior facilidade na instalação do Kernel e na configuração do mesmo, inclusive na criação do initrd (Initial Ram Disk) e afins. Use-o!
  • Se você precisar instalar ALSA, mantenha apenas ativo Sound Support e remova inclusive o ALSA do kernel do Linux. Esse suporte será implementado pelo próprio ALSA;

Depois de compilado o kernel, compilei o ALSA 1.0.14 direto do site e instalei-o usando sempre que possível pacotes .deb gerados por mim (algumas partes tiveram que ser instaladas com make install). Instalados ambos, após um reboot, o problema inverteu-se: as caixas de som perderam o áudio, tendo áudio apenas pela saída do fone de ouvido. O problema aqui era um ajuste na carga do driver ALSA. No caso, foi necessário adicionar a linha “options snd-hda-intel model=targa-2ch-dig” no arquivo /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-drivers. Depois disso, os ajustes de volume de áudio ficaram em Front e o sistema funcionou muito bem.

  • Vídeo
O driver de vídeo do Laptop é um “Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller“, conforme retornado pelo lspci. Em teoria, isso quer dizer que, com o uso do driver i810 do X.org, seria possível o uso de aceleração gráfica, ou seja, além de jogar jogos 3D como TORCS, Penguin Racer e OpenArena, seria possível usar-se Beryl ou Compiz para eye-candys 3D. Seguindo orientações como a desse artigo do blog “Where I can Finally be calm…” e essa do site VivaOLinux, tentei configurar o meu X para aceitar o Beryl. Instalei também todos os pacotes e, após ativar o Beryl, começaram os problemas: inicialmente perdi todas as decorações da janela. Além disso, e esse segundo problema ocorreu inclusive com Games 3D no Linux, meu sistema trava após um período aleatório de tempo. Tentei inclusive modificar meu /etc/X11/xorg.conf, incluindo uma diretriz VideoRam que poderia forçar o aumento da memória gráfica, mas tudo o que consegui foi piorar a performance do vídeo. Mantive a configuração com o VideoRam desativado e a performance voltou ao normal em 2D, com todos os games rodando com uma boa performance. Abaixo alguns snapshots.

  • Instalações extras

Algumas instalações foram feitas fora do “padrão” do Debian. No caso, foram instalados BrOffice.org, Java, Flash, CGoban 3 (cliente para à Kiseido Go Server) Mozilla Thunderbird (instalado no Debian como Icedove) e Mozilla Firefox, embora o Firefox venha instalado no Debian como IceWeasel por motivos de Marca Registrada. No caso, a instalação do Thunderbird e do Firefox foram tranqüilas, apenas descompactando os binários baixados do site da Mozilla no /opt. O BrOffice.org foi instalado conforme descrito em um artigo anterior meu usando a dica do Hamacker, adaptada para a nova versão do BrOffice.org, a 2.2.1, reintegrada ao codebase do OpenOffice.org original. Seguindo a mesma idéia desse artigo do meu blog, configurei o JDK 6.0 + Netbeans 5.5, e seguindo uma adaptação desse artigo da VivaOLinux para ativar o Java no Firefox.
O CGoban 3 foi razoavelmente fácil de ser instalado: uma vez instalado e configurando o Java como dito anteriorente, abra o terminal e use o comando “javaws http://files.gokgs.com/javaBin/cgoban.jnlp“. O próprio Java Web Start irá copiar e instalar o CGoban 3 por conta própria. Existe uma opção de instalação que não se associa à extensão .sgf (Smart Go File), formato de gravação de arquivos de jogos de Go. No caso, para mais informações sobre isso, entre no site da KGS.
Para instalar o Flash e o configurar no Firefox, não é muito difícil: pegue o plugin no site da Adobe. No caso do Debian, é melhor (pelo menos eu acho) usar o plugin em .tar.gz. Uma vez copiado o arquivo, abra um Terminal, descompacte-o em algum diretório e passe para root. Vá à pasta onde você descompactou o arquivo da Adobe e chame o instalador do Flash com o comando “./flashplayer-installer“. Confirme a instalação com Enter e aperte Enter novamente. Em seguida, informe a pasta do Firefox (no meu caso, /opt/firefox) e confirme com y a instalação. Se quiser (e tiver navegadores compatíveis), você pode instalar os plugins do Flash em outros navegadores, como o Konqueror, Epiphany, Iceweasel ou SeaMonkey (IceApe).

  • Do Etch para o Lenny

A passagem de Debian Etch para Debian Lenny (atual versão testing) é uma boa idéia apenas se sua estação de trabalho não precisar ser mantida estável. No meu caso, meu laptop é usado apenas por mim. De qualquer modo, isso é questão de opção pessoal. Para o fazer, copie um backup de seu /etc/apt/sources.list. Com seu editor favorito (no meu caso o emacs) modifique as entradas de stable para testing e de etch para lenny. Rode o apt-get update. Se houver alguma falha, verifique as fontes e modifique as entradas falhas de volta ao original (ou seja, de testing para stable e de lenny para etch) e reexecute o comando apt-get update. Assim que ele carregar corretamente todas as informações de repositório, rode apt-get -y dist-upgrade. Isso irá atualizar toda a sua distro. Aguarde que o download será intenso. Após o término e instalação dos pacotes .deb (durante os quais ele poderá pedir informações adicionais, abrindo janelas curses para pedido de configuração como de costume no Debian), reinicie o laptop. Seu Debian deverá ser já um Lenny.

    Caros,
    Comprei no Extra um notebook Mirax mm6610, e estou muito arrependido. Cheguei em casa, ao ligar, nada. Não funcionou. Corri no Extra para efetuar a troca, encontrei muita resistência, até conseguir. Apesar do preço elevadíssimo, o segundo funciona extremamente mal, a barra de espaço precisa receber forte pancada pra funcionar, a parte onde se apoia mão direita pra digitar esquenta ao ponto de não se poder trabalhar, a cam não deve ter a resolução indicada, pois é de péssima qualidade, enfim, estou muito, mas muito arrependido dessa compra.
    Falei com o fabricante e eles mandam procurar a assitência técnica. No Rio, sabe one fica? Na Taquara, longe de tudo e de todos.
    Paguei R$ 2.880,00 e fiquei a ver navios. Recomendo que ninguém compre para não terem o mesmo aborrecimento.
